After six weeks of supplementation, both groups took part in a 20-kilometer run. One day after the run, cell damage was 58% higher in the subjects not using beta-hydroxy beta metylbutyrate. In this study, beta-hydroxy beta metylbutyrate tended to increase strength and lean mass while significantly increasing fat loss in older adults.
2000 Nutritional supplementation of the leucine metabolite ß-hydroxy-ß-methylbutyrate during resistance training. Panton, L.B., J.A. Rathmacher, S. Baier, and S. Nissen. Nutrition 16:734-739. Two studies are reported which showed that regardless of gender or prior training, beta-hydroxy beta metylbutyrate increases strength and minimizes muscle damage.
2001 The effect of ß-hydroxy-ß-methylbutyrate on VO2 peak and lactate threshold in endurance-trained cyclists. Vukovich, M.D., and G.D. Dreifort. J. Strength and Conditioning Res. 15:491-497. This switchback study showed that beta-hydroxy beta metylbutyrate supplementation increased endurance as measured by VO2 peak and lactate threshold.
